Snowflake Obsidian is a unique variety of obsidian, a volcanic glass formed from cooled lava with inclusions of the white mineral, Cristobalite.

  1. Color: Snowflake Obsidian typically has a black base color with distinctive white or gray snowflake-like patterns scattered across its surface. The contrast between the black base and the white or gray patterns is quite striking.

  2. Hardness: It has a hardness of around 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, which means it's relatively durable but can still be scratched by harder materials.

  3. Clarity: Snowflake Obsidian is typically opaque, meaning light does not pass through it. The patterns on its surface can vary in clarity, but they often have a distinct and recognizable appearance.

  4. Luster: It has a vitreous to dull luster. This means that it can have a glassy shine, but it may also appear somewhat matte, depending on the specific surface texture and finish.

  5. Density: Snowflake Obsidian has a density similar to other types of obsidian, averaging around 2.35 to 2.40 grams per cubic centimeter.

  6. Metaphysical Properties: Like other forms of obsidian, Snowflake Obsidian is associated with grounding energy. It is believed to help anchor one's energy to the Earth, fostering a sense of stability and security. This stone is often used for protection against negativity and psychic attacks. Its dark color and the contrast of the white snowflake patterns are thought to create a shield against negative energies.

Photos have not been edited or altered, just taken in different daylight conditions to show the variation in color.  Pieces are held in hand to help with scale and does not necessarily represent 1 pound.  Specific pieces photographed may no longer be available.
